Hey neighbors!
Recently I've been spending a lot of time cleaning up trash and debris over in the Urban Reserve section of the Waterfront Park (between the Dog Park and "old" skate park).
In the past few years, I've seen so much negativity about our city and about how "they" won't do anything to fix it. Well...if you see something you don't like, don't just complain. Do something about it! I've found these cleanups to be super empowering individually and wanted to share the opportunity to build some community strength together.
This is a total grassroots-DIY-gig focused on getting trash out of our public space together as a community. I volunteer with the Burlington Parks Commission, but this project is community driven and powered by your neighbors. Bring any clean-up materials or personal protective equipment you may want or need. I'll have trash bags and some extra working gloves.
Last weekend for Green Up Day we were able to get nearly 40 full trash bags and many sharps containers out of the park and away from the lake. This built off of the good work the City Parks (BPRW) department on Earth Day (as seen on WCAX) as well as the small acts that many other interested members of the Burlington community had already started. However, the work is far from done, but I strongly believe many hands will make light work of this important part of our community.
Volunteerism is an endemic feature of Burlington's culture; here's a low stakes way to get connected!
